Selenium is an important antioxidant mineral required by the thyroid, heart, immune system and it also helps to counter heavy metals such as mercury, arsenic and cadmium.
Like other minerals, the selenium in our foods comes from the soil that food is grown in. However in New Zealand and Australia, the soil is very low in selenium which means that our food is also deficient in this key mineral.
